Tools for Effective Programmes

Great teachers are the key to effective learning programmes!

The best teaching and learning practice is fostered when teachers take action to:

  • Be a life-long learner themselves; modeling curiosity and enthusiasm to students
  • Create engaging, supportive learning environments and programmes
  • Encourage students in reflective thought and action, along with critical evaluation of established beliefs
  • Involve students directly so that they own their learning; including goal setting, assessment and evaluation
  • Enhance the relevance of learning by challenging students to apply it to new contexts and in new ways
  • Facilitate shared learning by cultivating the class as a learning community
  • Make connections to prior learning and experience, including that from home and the wider world; keeping learning real and relevant
  • Allow students opportunities to consolidate new learning in a cyclical way over a variety of tasks or contexts – working toward action competence
  • Inquire into the impact of teaching and learning experiences on their students:     focusing enquiry, teaching inquiry, learning inquiry
  • Observe and listen to students, utilising the information gained to inform future directions for learning and teaching
